App Onboarding That Converts: 10 Fixes Before You Touch Your Ads
Onboarding is the most expensive screen in your app: every install, organic or paid, goes through it, and many never come out the other side. Before buying more traffic, make sure the first minutes turn installs into active users. These are the fixes I look for first.
Get to value faster
1. Measure time to value
Define the moment a new user first gets what they came for, like finishing a first story or completing a first task, then count the screens and seconds before it. Every screen before that moment has to earn its place.
2. Show the product working, not a feature tour
Swipeable slides listing features are skipped. A live demo on a realistic example sells. Rockie's onboarding shows its AI breaking down a real household task instead of describing what the AI can do.
3. Let people try before they sign up
Mandatory accounts before any value cost you users. Ask for an account when there's something to save.
Ask better questions
4. Only ask what changes the experience
Personalisation questions work when the answer visibly changes what comes next. If it doesn't, cut the question.
5. Use answers to raise commitment
A question like "what's hardest for you right now?" both personalises the app and reminds people why they downloaded it, which helps the paywall that follows.
6. Ask for permissions in context
Notification and tracking prompts on first launch get refused. Ask when the user can see why: notifications right after they set a goal, for example. A refused system prompt is hard to get back.
Place the paywall deliberately
7. Put the paywall after the aha moment
A paywall that follows a real moment of value sells something the user has already felt. More in the paywall checklist.
8. Make the free path good
People who close the paywall should still find a useful app. They're your future converters and reviewers.
Measure it
9. Track every step as a funnel
Log an event for each onboarding screen and look at where people drop. The biggest drop is your first fix.
10. Change one thing at a time
Remove a screen, reorder two, change one question. Then compare cohorts before and after.
