App Store Screenshots That Convert: A Practical Guide for Indie Apps

Keywords get you into search results. Screenshots decide whether people tap. In a results list, users see your icon, name, subtitle and your first screenshots, next to competitors doing the same. Here's how to make those frames work.

The first two screenshots carry the page

Most people never scroll your gallery. Treat screenshot one as the headline and screenshot two as the proof. Everything else is for the few who are already interested.

Write captions people can read at thumbnail size

Show the real product

Real screens build trust; abstract illustrations make people wonder what the app actually looks like. Crop or zoom on the part that matters rather than shrinking a whole busy screen.

Keep one visual system

Same caption position, same type, same background treatment across frames. A consistent set looks like a real product; five different styles look like a template. On my own apps, I design screenshots to look like the app's own universe rather than generic marketing.

Don't forget the preview video

An app preview autoplays in some places, so its first seconds act like a screenshot. Show the product in use immediately, no logo intro. Check every frame: system UI like the status bar or Dynamic Island can look wrong in recordings.

Localise the captions

Captions in the user's language and spelling, with a hero screenshot adapted to each market if it makes sense. Even US and UK English differ.

Test, then keep what wins

Change one thing, ideally the first screenshot, wait for enough traffic, and compare conversion from page view to install. Keep the winner, test the next frame.
