ASO
ASO Agency vs Freelance Consultant vs DIY: Which One Fits Your App?
Once you realise most of your installs come from App Store search, the next question is who should work on it. There are three options, and the right one depends far more on your app's stage than on budget alone.
The three options at a glance
| DIY | Freelance consultant | Agency | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Pre-launch, tiny budget | Early-stage apps finding traction | Established apps, many markets |
| Cost | Your time plus a tool | One-off audit or light monthly | Monthly retainer |
| Speed | Slow, learning curve | Days | Weeks to onboard |
| Who does the work | You | The person you talk to | Often a junior account team |
| Product input | Full | High, if they build apps | Usually marketing-only |
When DIY makes sense
Before launch, or when the app has no traction yet, doing ASO yourself is a great way to learn how your users describe their problem. Expect to spend real hours on keyword research and to make beginner mistakes, like repeating words across fields or picking keywords only giants can rank for.
When a freelance consultant makes sense
When the app is live, the product works, and downloads aren't following. A good consultant gives you a sharp outside view quickly, rewrites the metadata and tells you what to change in your visuals. The key question to ask: have they grown apps of their own? Someone who has shipped and ranked their own apps knows which advice survives contact with the real App Store.
When an agency makes sense
When you have many apps or many markets, need constant monitoring, localisation in dozens of languages and paid user acquisition managed alongside ASO. For a single early-stage app, a retainer is usually more than you need.
A simple rule to decide
- No users yet? Do it yourself and learn.
- Live, stable product, flat downloads? Get a one-off audit, ship the changes, measure.
- Changes work and you want to keep iterating? Light monthly support from the same person.
- Many apps, many markets, big UA budget? Agency.
Questions to ask before hiring anyone
- Which apps have you grown, and can I see them in the store?
- Will you write the new metadata, or only recommend?
- Who does the actual work?
- How will we know if it worked, and when?
- Do you look at the product too, or only the store page?
The last one matters more than it seems: sometimes the store page is fine and the real problem is onboarding, the paywall or retention. That's why I offer both an ASO Express Audit and a full app audit.
